TOPIC: Book Voting System

Book Voting System 1 year, 1 month ago #1

The voting system at the moment is simplistic but I can see that it gets the job done.

I would be interested in a system that gives me a number of voting points to allocate to books. e.g. The way UserVoice let's you vote for ideas.

Over time I would be interested to see a history of the titles I have voted for and the points I allocated to books.

Just a suggestion for future enhancements.

My suggestion goes into a similar direction, so I blatantly add it to your topic

History is a good ides, but I think with more and more suggestions coming in a 'see new rescue candidates' or 'see books I did not vote on' function would also be very helpful.

I'm a little concerned that only the most obviously popular choices are going to get selected for digitising (witness the high votes for the only Arthur C Clarke novel on the list). I see the logic there but it's not why I came on board. I want odd stuff that I've not heard of and books that maybe aren't even entirely successful or well written. I'm after interesting failures as much as I'm after rip-roaring successes. It would be a shame if none of these ever made it to the digitising process. It'd be reassuring to know that every now and again we might get one of these unloved, bottom-of-the-pile novels.

I'm hoping for a similar mix. I suspect this will happen organically due to the mission of finding books that aren't currently available digitally. Imperial Planet, for example, is available. Many of the bigger name authors are likely already rescued just for their notoriety.

I suspect it may not matter. The high profile books will be difficult to get rights to. We'll have a better chance at the obscure ones.

I've noted this elsewhere, but the content in the voting system at the moment is more or less dummy content. We're pulling out likely candidates as we catalog about 5000 books we have on hand, and once we start pulling those up, you're unlikely to see it skewed towards the "popular" authors.

Plus, the point about the rights is dead on.

There's a part of me that is seriously jealous of the idea of cataloging 5000 old science fiction books, the actual hands on part, seeing all the covers. I can smell those old yellowed pages. Of course, I'd be of no actual help, because I'd get distracted and start reading by no later than the fifth book I looked at.
