Help us choose vintage scifi to be saved

We're working hard to vet vintage scifi titles that are excellent candidates for rescue by Singularity&Co. As we do, we'll add them here, and members can rate them. The books with the highest ratings are the ones we work on next.

Not every book that we go after will get rescued right away, but at least once a month (and most likely more often than that) one of the top rated books in this section will be digitized, proofread, and turned into an ebook, available to Singularity&Co. members before it is available to anyone else.

You can also find paper copies of many of these books in our Brooklyn Bookshop, or online at ScifiBooks.com.

Ballroom of the Skies

John D. MacDonald
4.7/5 rating (3 votes)

John D. MacDonald is a renowned author of the hard boiled genre, a favorite of Stephen King and Carl Hiaasen. His Travis McGee series (still in print) is one of the most prolific character-based works of fiction of the 20th century. Among his large body of work are three science fiction books, all out of print. Ballroom of the Skies takes place in a dystopian side-step of the 1950s, set in the 70s, sometime after World War III. Brazil, Iran, and India are the prevailing superpowers. The tense socio-political scenario can easily translate to our own 21st century fears. The plot delves into the reasons behind humanity's history of perpetual war and strife, and one man's paranoid journey behind the veil to see who pulls the strings.
